■ STUDY OF NONLINEAR SSI ANALYSIS OF CONCRETE SHEAR WALL
  BUILDINGS USING TIME DOMAIN AND FREQUENCY DOMAIN
  APPROACHES

Soil structure interaction (SSI) analysis is traditionally carried out using linear and equivalent linear approaches in frequency domain. The equivalent linear techniques are the current practice to incorporate nonlinear effects in frequency domain but can have limitations at high level of strains particularly when the nuclear facility is subjected to a strong ground motion. Recently released ASCE 4-16 (ASCE, 2017) provides detailed guidance for nonlinear time domain SSI analysis in its Appendix B. In this paper, a study of nonlinear SSI analysis of a concrete shear wall building is carried out using a time domain approach and an iterative frequency domain approach.

■ ANALYSIS OF REINFORCED CONCRETE WALLS FOR IMPACT OF LARGE
  DRIFTWOOD DURING TSUNAMIS

Recently more than 20 meters high reinforced concrete seawalls have been constructed in many nuclear power plants particularly in Japan, to prevent flooding inside the plant in case of a tsunami event. The impact of driftwood is one of the major threats to these seawalls because uncertainty in the size of driftwood and the potential for very large forces due to impact. The existing equations for estimation of peak force due to impact of driftwood have significant variations. Proper estimation of driftwood impact force and damage to these seawalls are very important for safety evaluation of the plant. This paper investigates the characteristics of driftwood impact force, an equation to estimate peak impact force, and damage to reinforced concrete walls using detailed numerical simulations.
